Deb gets all the credit for this one. She had visited Lake Como years before and told me I had to see it to believe it. We stayed there after our Madesimo scout trip last March and she was correct: it is a fantastic place! The lake is dotted by dozens of small ancient villages accessed by ferry. The villages are full of Italian food, mountain/lake vistas, and many Italian surprises. Lake Como is an unbelievable experience. We know you will love staying there for 4 nights. It is the only way to truly understand and absorb the energy and majesty of this unique place. The village of Bellagio is the best place to stay on the entire lake, in our humble opinion. There are many places to choose from, as Lake Como is very large. Bellagio is one of the most charming and it is well located. It is also right on the ferry line so it is very easy to hop on the boats and go.
The Hotel Silvio is spectacular. It is above the lake and has wonderful views. Deb and Skiman stayed there on our scouting trip and we loved everything about the place. The hotel is new and modern, the rooms rock, the restaurant on-site is magnificent with commanding views and off-the-charts food. But of course!! It is Italy after all!
Once you arrive in Bellagio, you will be free to explore at your own pace and do whatever you would like. Explore the city of Como after an hour long spectacular boat ride. Visit the Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo with its gardens that can take hours to see. In Leno, check out the monastery that was turned into the Villa Balbianello by an Italian grocery store magnet. It is now a museum that displays artifacts from all over the world that he picked up on his many adventures. Of course, we will be there to point you in the right direction and make suggestions. We are looking forward to returning to Bellagio with our skier friends. It is going to be memorable for all of us.
Deb’s Take on Lake Como
I first visited Lake Como in early fall. The beautiful villages right at water’s edge, their reflections mirrored in the lake, were something to behold. The only description that I can conjure is “magical”. My senses were overwhelmed. Some of the best meals and exploring we found were in this region. I could see why George Clooney bought a place here.To return again this past spring with Dan was just as magical. We arrived by ferry just as the sun broke through the clouds. What a marvelous welcome. The weather was cool but pleasant. I did not know how wonderful it would be to visit at a time less crowded. It seemed we had the lake almost to ourselves! The gardens at the Villa Carlotta had had just enough sun and warmth to bring an explosion of color to the gardens. The hours we allotted there were certainly rewarding. Villa Balbianello, one of the most picturesque villas on Lake Como, was a place that I did not visit the first time. Wow!! What made this place such fun was that it has recent history as well as centuries-old artifacts from all over the world. With only two full days to explore, we left wanting to experience more. We cannot wait to return to discover more about this magical place.
