The largest ski resort in the world… To appreciate the vastness, paste the link below in your browser for an interactive lift map of Les Arcs / La Plagna: https://www.snow-online.com/ski-resort/paradiski-les-arcs-peisey-vallendry-la-plagne-_trailmap.html
Perspective: just how big is Les Arcs / La Plagna? This ski complex has 158 lifts and 264 miles of groomed trails. Vail, Colorado has 31 lifts. Jackson Hole has 12. These are big resorts by American standards. This French resort, the LARGEST in the world, dwarfs them. Until you ski the huge resorts that dot the Alps landscape, you just cannot wrap your mind around how much terrain they cover. When you include the off-trail backcountry
skiing, flat out there is nothing in North America that comes close to the enormity and magnitude of resorts like Les Arcs / La Plagna. Before 2003, these two resorts were not connected. They were two giants in their own right existing side by side. But as the French are want to do, they decided to hook these two behemoths together by a tram: Vanoise Express. Built by Poma in time for the ’03-’04 season, the lift stretches 1,800 m (5,900 ft), 380 m (1,250 ft) over the valley, takes 4 minutes to cross, and cost over 15 million Euro to complete. The result was the creation of the largest single ski resort in the world. Called the Paraski region, it is accessible by one lift pass. You cannot ski everything here in a week. Morningstar did a ski week years ago and loved it. We stayed in La Plagna, which in retrospect was not as good as staying in Les Arcs. Les Arcs is much better located to access more of the terrain without a lot of lift riding. Les Arcs has more expensive lodging, but it is worth it. It is the prime place to stay when skiing this region.
The skiing here is outstanding by any measure. It is a very high-elevation resort and usually has a lot of snow. Because it covers so much area, there are slopes with all different directional aspects, so you can usually find good snow no matter the climate conditions. In typical French fashion, the lift system is spectacular with modern high-speed chairs, gondolas, and trams. The mix of trail levels is perfect: 56% intermediate, 40% difficult intermediate/expert. The off-trail skiing for experts is stunning. There are limitless possibilities if you have a local guide to keep you safe. This is the reason Skiman has gone back for Europe for the past 25 years… the off-trail skiing is spectacular in the Alps and there is nothing like it in the U.S. It is addictive and more is required! If you are an expert, you must do this guided skiing. It is beyond anything you can imagine. And we will do one optional heli-skiing day.
The lift pass for this mega-resort is called the Paradiski Pass and it allows access to the entire region. Our hotel offered us a Les Arcs 6-day pass for a $160 savings per person.
Even if you are planning on skiing 3 or 4 days, it is still less expensive than purchasing a pass on your own. We are INCLUDING a six day pass to Les Arcs. Further, if you would like to upgrade to the pass that includes La Plagna and everything in between, you can do so for only $30. This is highly recommended. This upgraded all-area ticket is a special 6-day pass that allows you to SKIP THE LINES!
Our ski in / ski out Hotel Arcadien is located in the heart of Les Arcs. The 3-star Arcadien is in the village of Les Arcs 1650. It could not be closer to the slopes. It gets rave reviews for food, facilities, and staff. As with all our Alps tours, the Arcadien stay includes a full breakfast and 3 course dinner daily. The Arcadien has a full spa for your enjoyment, with sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, and massages available. We are excited to stay in a first-class property in the middle of the largest ski resort in the world.
Les Arcs / La Plagna Statistics
264 miles of groomed trails
4-star ratings for:
Extent / Snow / Intermediate/Snowboarding
5-star ratings for:
Expert terrain / Off-trail guided skiing
Note on guided skiing: One BIG advantage with our tour is the affordability of off-trail skiing. On your own, the guides are expensive per day. But with our groups, we can split the cost up, allowing for outstanding backcounty skiing for @$70 a day. Intermediate guided ON-TRAIL days. For those of you who want to enjoy the skiing on trail but would like to have a guided experience with a local guide, we will organize one or two such days for you. Especially with a resort of this size, it is a great idea to spend a day with a local guide who can show you around the area, point out the best restaurants, and give you some instructional tips as well.
Why go with Morningstar to the Alps?
*Convenience. You show up at the airport, we do the rest.
*Assurance. Nice to know if something goes wrong or you get injured, there are a lot of very
nice folks to lend a hand.
*Our experience. We have taken @5,000 people to Europe over the past 25 years. We know
how to put the nuts and bolts of a trip to the Alps together. We know the potential pitfalls
and mistakes that can be made when planning a European ski holiday.
*We save you money. Keep in mind it is not just the package that is a good value. If you
are joining one of our expert guided groups or intermeiate guided groups, you save a huge
amount. A guide costs $500 a day. On your own or with a friend, that makes for a pricey
day. With us the guide cost is divided by up to 8 skiers and is therefore afforable.
*It is great to make new friends from all over the U.S. We have some of the nicest skiers around!
Intermediate On-Trail skiing: This region is perfect for intermediate and expert skiers who prefer to stick to the groomed trails. There are hundreds of kilometers of groomers that will keep you busy and happy for the entire week. You can journey all the way to France on skis, have fondue for lunch, and ski back to Italy on the same day. Each morning you can chose your own adventure. It is one of the best resorts for intermediates.
The air for this tour: You arrange you own air with the parameters below in mind. You must arrive by March 7,
2020. That means you must leave the U.S. no later than March 6.
No matter what segments you are doing, your air must arrive into your European airport by noon. It must not depart before 10:30 AM.
Sestriere only: Arrive and depart Milan MXP airport.
Les Arcs only: Arrive and depart Geneva GVA airport.
Doing both ski weeks: Arrive in Milan MXP and depart Geneva GVA.
Doing Ireland as well? Make your departure from Dublin DUB
Doing both ski weeks (Sestriere, Italy and Les Arcs, France): Many of our skier friends do both ski weeks. If you have the resources and the time, this is a great idea. You have to pay to fly over to Europe and back, so the longer you stay, the more value you are getting out of your ticket.
Note: For all skiers doing multiple weeks, there will be an additional charge for the connecting ride between the ski weeks. This cost will be determined at time of final payment and is dependent on the number of participants using this service. Contact us for all the details about doing multiple weeks.
