We did this same combo of French resorts 11 years ago.  CLICK for a short video from our 2007 Ski Movie to get a feel for how amazing these two resorts are!

Portes du Soleil is a group of French and Swiss resorts, all connected. It offers a famous circular ski circuit tour that takes you through five resorts in two countries.  It is an intermediate skiers dream, as you can cruise through quaint villages in two countries.  The amount of skiing here is crazy, with 404 MILES of groomed trails.  Throw in all the expert terrain that is a available for expert guided skiing, and you end up with the second largest ski resort in the world.  The two main resorts are Avoriaz and Morzine.  Of the two, Morzine is the coolest and best located. This is where we will be staying for our week long stay in this gorgeous region.

Some of Morningstar skiers tracks from 10 years ago. Spectacular ski days were had on that week. Time to go lay down some more new tracks.

The skiing here is perfect for intermediate skier due to the interconnected circuit and the hundreds of miles of groomed trails.  We will organize GUIDED INTERMEDIATE ski days, where a local instructor will spend the day with the intermediate crew showing them the mountain, offering instruction along the way. This place is huge and having someone show you the ropes is a great idea.   We will offer these intermediate guided days at least twice during the ski week.

For expert skiers who sign up for our guided backcountry off-trail ski groups, the possibilities are endless. As with Trois Vallee on the following week, we will not be able to ski anywhere near all that is there to ski.  It truly is huge and the off trail skiing is excellent.  The guides will be taking us to the best terrain and to the best snow available. The guided backcountry skiing is the main reason Skiman goes to Europe every year.  My best ski memories overwhelmingly come from the days of skiing in Europe off trail with my guide friends. If you are an expert, you don’t want to miss out on this. It is an add-on activity and it does cost extra, but it is worth every penny. The Alpine Guides in Europe are the best trained in the world and you will learn more from skiing with them than about anyone else.  And they will keep us all safe to boot.

Advantages to skiing Europe with a Morningstar Group

Powder… interested?

*Convenience. You show up at the airport, we do the rest.
*Assurance.  Nice to know if something goes wrong or you get injured, there are a lot of very
nice folks to lend a hand.
*Our experience. We have taken @5,000 people to Europe over the past 24 years. We know
how to put the nuts and bolts of a trip to the Alps together. We know the potential pitfalls
and mistakes that can be made when planning a European ski holiday.
*We save you money. Keep in mind it is not just the package that is a good value. If you
are joining one of our expert guided groups or intermeiate guided groups, you save a huge
amount. A guide costs $500 a day. On your own or with a friend, that makes for a pricey
day. With us  the guide cost is divided by up to 8 skiers and is therefore afforable.
*It is great to make new friends from all over the U.S.! We have the nicest skiers around!

3 star Le Cret is an excellet lodging choice. 2 pools, full spa, hot tubs.. all included in this gem of a property.

Not only is the skiing excellent for this week, but our hotel is as well. Ten years ago  we stayed at the Le Cret and loved it. We  guarantee you will as well. It has two swimming pools, hot tubs, steam and sauna rooms, all included with no spa fees (a rarity in Europe). Further, the food was excellent.  And it is a short walk to the lifts! The main thing I remember was that they had a designated dessert/pastry chef. There was calorie carnage that week for sure… expect the same!

Click for photo gallery of the Le Cret and you will see why we  love this place!

10 years ago, there was an amazing amount of snow to ski on... hoping for same this year!

10 years ago, there was an amazing amount of snow to ski on!

Which ski week should I do? We get that question a lot. Our favorite answer: do both! No one in the past 24 years of Europe trips that has done both ever regretted it! But if that is not possible, here are some factors to help you decide between on or the other week.

*If you are joining us for our Puglia, Italy post-trip, you have no choice. You must do the second ski week.

*Both ski resorts are similar in size and scope. They are both huge.

*Both ski resorts offer inexpensive lift passes, half of U.S. resorts, at around $50 per day.

Advantages of Portes du Soleul / Morzine ski week:

-We like the hotel  this week because of  its wonderful spa facility.

      -Morzine is uber charming.

-The lifts are a short walk from our hotel.

-There are less skiers here than in Trois Vallees. It is a bit more quaint in feeling.

Advantages of Trois Vallees ski week:

-The skiing region is  really well connected and the skiing flows between areas.

   – Most of the skiing is higher elevation and this can result in better snow quality. But, of course, you never know.

   – For experts, Trois Vallees offers a bit more expert terrain than does Portes du Soleil. But both areas are great for off-trail.

-Trois Vallees does have more skiers, but they also have a bigger  lift system than the Portes du Soliel.  In any case, lift lines are not a problem at either resort.

Food for thought.  Hope this section is helpful in your decision-making process. Of course, email or call with any other questions you have that will help you decide. We know both resorts well and can probably answer your questions.

Air to Europe:   The air game has changed and it seems that nowadays there are better deals to be had by booking air on an individual basis. The deals our 80 skiers got last year on their own smoked what we could have gotten as a group rate. So the same strategy will be in force this year. Everyone will have to get their air from their U.S. gateway city. You simply book air that leaves the U.S. on March 8 and arrives into Geneva March 9 on or before 11 AM..  For the return you book it out of Geneva on any flight that leaves at 10AM or later on your departure date. Use miles, buy the ticket outright… up to you. Caveat: Please do NOT purchase your air until we are certain we have reached critical mass number-wise for the tours. As soon as we have a minimum of 20 skiers deposited for each tour, we will give the go-ahead to purchase tickets from that point on. We do not want anyone buying non-refundable air until we are certain the tours are a go.  We have done 24 consecutive European tours and have never canceled one, but we prefer safe to sorry.

Doing both ski weeks: We have many of our skier friends that want to save  money and stay for both ski weeks. If you have the resources and the time, this is a great idea. You have to pay to fly over to Europe and back, so the longer you stay, the more value you are getting out of your ticket. Contact us for the details. Note: There will be a surcharge for the transfer between the two ski weeks for those doing both weeks. This will be determined once we know the exact number of two-week participants. The distance between Portes du Solei and Trois Vallees  is about 1.5 hours. We will organize the most economical mode of transport depending on the number of participants that need to be transported and divide that cost among the participants.

What you must do to join us on this ski week:

1- Decide how many segments you are doing. Ski week only? Both ski weeks? Puglia, Italy  post trip?

2-Send in your first deposit BY NOVEMBER 15, 2018. We only have limited space so the sooner you deposit, the better.

3-Get your air to Geneva GVA airport

4-Get prepared to have a spectacular time in Europe with us!

In the 1960’s, the French government had a vision and a mission: find the perfect mountainous region in which to build a series of ski resorts, all connected by the biggest lift system in the world. They flew all over the French Alps in helicopters to discover the optimum place to fulfill their goal. They succeeded and the result is what today is known as the Trois Vallees (Three Valleys) ski complex. Made up of three world-class resorts, Meribel,

Courchevel, and Val Thorens. It is difficult to describe just how massive this resort is. It is the one of the largest ski complexs on the planet, with 373 miles of designated groomed trails and 183 lifts. As stated on the Europe intro page, you can fit all of the ski resort terrain of Colorado, California, and Utah INSIDE of Trois Vallees! Suffice it to say: you cannot ski this all in months. It is spectacular.

Deb and Skiman above the river that runs through and right next to our hotel in Brides les Bains.

Deb and Skiman above the river that runs through the center of Brides les Bains, our village for the week.

Morningstar has done four ski weeks in this region and has taken  300 skiers to this resort. Everyone came away awestruck at the immensity and diversity of terrain.  As with our fist ski week in Portes du Soleil, all of the resorts are connected by ski trails, so you can explore a long way and visit several villages via skis.

The challenge of Trois Vallees skiing can be affordability. The biggest and some of the best skiing comes at a price. We found a good way to offer our skiers an affordable way to experience this region without the sticker shock. When France hosted the Olympics here years ago, they connected the small thermal spa village of Brides les Bain ( pronounced breed le bon) to Meribel which is in the center of the ski region, via a 25 minute gondola ride. Our hotel, The Amelie, is a few minutes walk to the gondola station and a short gondola ride to the center of it all. Located along a rushing river in the middle of a thermal spa village, The Amelie was wonderful on our previous visits. It was a very nice three star hotel then and it has recently been remodeled and updated further. It is within walking distance of the thermal spa complex and a large casino in town. The food was excellent and we liked everything about this property. It offers very nice accommodations in an expensive ski resort and is still only a short gondi ride to the skiing action.

In short, Trois Vallees has it all when it comes to skiing. Every serious rider should experience this resort at least once in their lives. For Skiman this will be week 5.  He cannot wait to go back. He’s  only scratched the surface of this ski behemoth.

For intermediate skiers:  As with our first ski week to Portes du Soleil, you will be skiing in a massive, interconnected, resort. It will certainly double your fun to spend a day or two with a local guide to show you around. All skiing will be on groomed runs and you will not only have a guide, but you will have an instructor for the day. There is extra cost for this, but it is highly recommended and worth it.

For experts:  Trois Vallees is the epitome of off-trail backcountry skiing. Vast, varied, terrain offers unlimited possibilities. To do it safely, you must have a guide, and one of Skiman’s all-time-favorites is going to be our lead guide for the fourth time. Phillipe is a local guide who knows every inch of the ski region. He will take us to the best and he will keep us safe as we go. Phillipe is so funny and so French! It is an experience to ski with him, to be sure. And, he is the only guide who invited our guided group to his home for dinner with his wife!  Like we said: Phillipe is a gem!

Some of our backcountry skiers 5 years ago.

Some of our backcountry skiers 5 years ago

He is a great joy to ski with and Skiman holds him in high esteem. If you are an expert, you must do the guided skiing. It is the reason Skiman goes back to Europe every year. The back country skiing afforded in the Alps is just not available in the U.S. It has reinvented Skiman’s definition of skiing. I have learned more about skiing from these European alpine guides than from any other source. It is an honor to ski with them. Phillipe is one of the best of this breed and we can’t wait to see and ski with our old friend again.
