How about a trip to the Milky Way? That’s right. Morningstar is offering a trip to the Milky Way this March. But it is not a journey to the stars. It is a journey to the Italian Milky Way….the ski complex surrounding the resort of Sestriere, Italy. Made up of 5 Italian ski resorts and one French resort, it offers over 250 miles of groomed trails! No way will you be able to ski it all. Every day you can ski a different resort if you choose. With this much skiing, there will be plenty of variety to keep you interested and happy. And for the experts, the off-trail possibilities is limitless. We will offer guided off-trail skiing for the entire week for those interested. Once you see the vast ski terrain in this region, you will understand why the 2006 Olumpics were held here. Morningstar has done three ski weeks in this amazing ski region and every one of those weeks offered fresh powder skiing. Skiman has yet to go to Sestriere when it did not dump. Some of our most wonderful memories come from our ski days in Sestriere. It is not an accident that we are going back for the fourth time.
Our village this time: We are going to stay in a village new to us: Sauze d’Oulx.
Pronounced ‘sows eh duce’) this village is small and quaint and is connected by road and skiing to all the other resorts in the area. We have found a very charming 4 star hotel in the heart of the village that will be our home for the week. Breakfast and a 4 four course dinner is included daily in your stay.
Things near by: Turin is only one hour away and makes for a perfect day trip. Turin has some very interesting attractions, especially its Egyptian museum which is the second-best in the world… definitely worth a day trip.
Off-trail memories: Crazy good ski days have been had in Sestriere. Tree runs that last 1.5 hours… no kidding!… Huge ski runs, so big that on one day we skied only two runs all day… Skiing thru the ruins of a mining village that was wiped out 110 years ago by an avalanche…. Being the first American group to hike up to the top of a huge chute called Galaxia and ripping pow top to bottom, at the end of which was lunch with Jimi Hendrix’ Star Spangled Banner playing to crown our “first descent”…..Skiing to our guide Andrea’s house so he could check on his pregnant cow. The house was built in 1410… Lots of great Sestriere memories… let’s go make some more!
Doing 2 or 3 ski weeks: We have many of our skier friends that want to save money and stay for more than one ski week. If you have the resources and the time, this is a great idea. You have to pay to fly over to Europe and back, so the longer you stay, the more value you are getting out of your ticket. You save money on each additional ski week. Take $100 off the added ski week(s) cost, since there is no air component needed. You also save a bundle by not having to pay the air taxes for additional ski weeks. NOTE: For all skiers doing multiple weeks, there will be an additional charge for the connecting charter bus ride between the ski weeks. This cost will be determined at time of final payment and is dependent on the number of participants using this service. Contact us for all the details about doing multiple weeks.
The air for this tour
Last year for the first time, we used Emerites Air because we had heard great things about their service and they offered us an amazing group price. They lived up to their reputation and all of our skiers from last year’s Europe tours raved about Emerites. So, if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it. Emerites has once again offered us a great group rate for this year’s tours to Europe.
How it works: This tour start with air originating from JFK airport. Like a cruise, it is each passenger’s responsibility to get to the departure point. So it is requisite for you to get to/from JFK on your own. This air segment to/from your U.S. home airport is NOT included in the package price. Of course, if you need assistance in booking required flights, we are happy to help you and book any required air. Just ask.
Air taxes and fuel charges: All international flights charge fuel surcharges and landing taxes. These are not included in the package price, as they can fluctuate up until the time of final payment in January. Currently, these taxes and fees are @$599 per person.
Note to Western U.S. flyers: The Emerites flights do not return back into JFK until late afternoon at the end of the tour. It makes finding connecting flights to airports in the West difficult or impossible. Therefore, it may be necessary for you to have to spend a night at a JFK-area hotel and book your return flight home on the day following your return landing at JFK.
Upper Beginner and Intermediate women’s ski clinics by Deb: Skiman’s wife has learned a lot of tips from her hubby and would like to share these with the ladies on the tour. She will offer two morning sessions during the week to work on and fine-tune your ski skills. Each session will be followed by a lunch at one of the wonderful restaurants in the resort. The lesson is free, the lunch is on you. No stress, no pressure….have some fun and get better at skiing.. Why not?
Get your Italian Mojo going!
